Thousands Gather at Kibuli Grand Mosque to Commemorate the Legacy of Prince Nuuhu Mbogo

Muslims from across the country and beyond converged at Kibuli Grand Mosque over the weekend for the 2026 annual commemoration of Prince Nuuhu Mbogo Kyabasinga, marking his return from exile and honoring his role in the spread of Islam in the country.

The grounds of Kibuli Grand Mosque reached full capacity as elderly women, young girls, scholars, and community leaders joined the nationwide gathering.

The event was broadcast live on Salam TV, with field coverage led by Aminah Nabukenya and the full Salam TV crew. Viewers were also able to follow proceedings via the Afromobile app.

Supreme Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Muhammad Galabuzi, addressed the congregation, stressing a new chapter for the Muslim community at Kibuli.

“There are no longer any conflicts at Kibuli. Our focus now is on unity and development,” the Mufti said. He also cautioned against the alleged mixing of halal and haram meat, saying the matter “has come to our attention, and we will address it without delay.”

On social conduct, Sheikh Galabuzi condemned “prom parties held in schools” as un-Islamic, calling for them to be stopped in Islamic schools because they “promote immorality.”

He further reaffirmed the nationwide mandate of the Mufti’s office, noting plans to expand its presence to all parts of the country “in a transparent manner.”

Guest of Honour, Prince Kasim Nakibinge, opened his remarks with the biography of Prince Nuuhu Mbogo Kyabasinga.

He recounted the circumstances of the Prince’s exile, his return to Uganda, and his subsequent contributions, including adopting Islamic attire, leading animal slaughter, and intensifying the spread of Islam nationwide.

According to Prince Nakibinge, the commemoration has been observed for over 130 years because it “underscores love for one another and promotes unity among all people, without discrimination based on political affiliation.”

The Prince also commended the government for appointing Muslims such as Hon. Harunah Kasolo to senior positions and appealed for more inclusive appointments.

He condemned recent human rights violations in Uganda and urged authorities to “deal with criminals strictly within the law, rather than creating fear across the country without clear information.”

Guest preacher Prince Ali Kachope highlighted Prince Mbogo’s achievements and his dedication to advancing Islam in Uganda despite the challenges of his era. He told attendees that “his life deserves to be honored and remembered.”

Organizers described the 2026 commemoration as a success, noting the large turnout reflected “peace, unity, and solidarity among Muslims.”

The gathering concluded with prayers for Prince Nuuhu Mbogo Kyabasinga, with many praying that “Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah.”
