The Uganda media fraternity and opposition political leaders are mourning the death of BBS Television journalist Joseph Sseruwooza, who passed away at Mulago National Referral Hospital in the early hours of Friday due to complications reportedly linked to an ulcer condition.
His death, which occurred at around 4:00am, has shocked colleagues in both the media and political circles, with tributes describing him as a committed and ethical journalist.
President of the Uganda Press Parliamentary Association (UPPA) Sam Ibanda Mugabi said the association had lost a “gallant media personality” who served diligently within the parliamentary press system.
He said Sseruwooza had been an active member of the UPPA leadership structure, where he served as chief whip and played a key role in guiding journalists in the parliamentary press gallery.
“As UPPA we have lost a hardworking, disciplined journalist. Joseph was more than a colleague, he was a brother, a mentor, and a guardian of our professional standards,” Ibanda said.
He added that Sseruwooza’s commitment to accurate and ethical reporting from Parliament inspired many young journalists who passed through the press gallery.
Opposition leaders also joined in mourning the journalist, with National Unity Platform Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya describing the news as deeply painful.
“Terrible news this morning of the untimely passing of Joseph Sseruwooza. Kitalo nnyo! Deepest condolences to BBS and the entire media fraternity in Uganda,” Rubongoya wrote on X.
Kira Municipality MP George Musisi said he was left heartbroken after learning of Sseruwooza’s death shortly after appearing on his programme.
“Two days ago I was hosted by my friend Joseph Sseruwooza, like he has done several times in the past. This morning we have received news of his passing. Very heartbreaking,” Musisi said.
Former Kira Municipality parliamentary aspirant Asinansi Nyakato of the People’s Front for Freedom also described Sseruwooza as a professional and hardworking journalist who served with integrity.
Sseruwooza had built a reputation as a respected parliamentary reporter and political talk show host, widely known for his calm interviewing style and focus on public accountability issues.
His death has left a gap in Uganda’s parliamentary press corps, where he was regarded as one of the consistent voices covering legislative affairs.
