Government has started compensating landowners affected by the planned iron ore factory in Rubanda District, the State Minister for Finance in Charge of General Duties, Henry Musasizi, has announced.
The development follows President Museveni’s directive during campaigns in Rubanda District in November 2025, when he instructed local leaders to secure 150 acres of land for an industrial hub expected to spur job creation and accelerate industrialisation in the Kigezi Sub-region.
Museveni argued that the project would play a key role in absorbing unemployed youth and boosting local economic activity.
During the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations held at the former Kabale National Teachers’ College grounds in February 2026, Museveni assured affected residents that they would be fully compensated in accordance with the law.
He also urged compliance with Section 9 of the Mining and Minerals Act, 2022, which vests ownership of all minerals in government.
Speaking as guest of honour at the swearing-in ceremony of the Kabale Municipal Mayor and councillors, Musasizi, who also serves as Rubanda East Member of Parliament, said he had been assigned by the President to oversee the compensation process for landowners in Murukoro Village, Nyarurambi Ward, Rubanda Town Council.
He noted that the Chief Government Valuer is currently assessing the land to determine appropriate compensation amounts.
Once the valuation process is completed, affected landowners will be paid to clear the way for construction of the iron ore factory.
“The factory is expected to create employment opportunities for residents across Kigezi when completed,” Musasizi stated.
