Pope Leo XIV has appointed Most Rev. Tomasz Grysa as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, the Vatican announced on May 14, 2026.
An Apostolic Nuncio serves as the Pope’s diplomatic representative to a country and also acts as a liaison between the Vatican and the local Catholic Church.
Archbishop Grysa succeeds Luigi Bianco, who served as Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda from 2019.
In May 2025, Archbishop Bianco was reassigned by Pope Leo XIV to serve as Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia and Apostolic Delegate to Kosovo.
Since his departure, the Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda has been under the acting leadership of Rev. Fr. Georges Kwami Kouwonou.
Archbishop Grysa previously served within the diplomatic service of the Holy See, although further details regarding his previous assignments are expected from the Vatican Press Office.
The appointment follows the standard Vatican protocol for papal diplomatic postings, under which the Apostolic Nuncio presents credentials to the President of Uganda upon arrival in the country.
