Uganda has taken a major step toward expanding its global coffee market reach following the launch of a strategic partnership with Turkish coffee company Kafe Kavil in Ankara, aimed at boosting exports and strengthening bilateral trade relations with Türkiye.

The collaboration was unveiled during a high-level coffee cupping and trade engagement hosted by the Embassy of Uganda in Ankara in partnership with Kafe Kavil.

The event provided a direct platform for Turkish buyers, roasters, investors, and consumers to experience Uganda’s premium Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties.

It attracted a wide range of participants, including importers, exporters, specialty roasters, diplomats, and coffee professionals exploring opportunities for sourcing, investment, and long-term cooperation.

The initiative comes as Uganda intensifies efforts to position itself as a competitive origin in the global specialty coffee market.

Government projections indicate that annual coffee production is expected to rise from 9.3 million 60-kilogram bags to more than 20 million bags by 2030 under the National Coffee Planting Programme, a strategy aimed at increasing export earnings and farmer incomes.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Nusura Tiperu, described the partnership as a significant milestone in strengthening economic relations between the two countries.

“This partnership creates a direct platform to showcase Uganda’s coffee, culture, and investment potential to Turkish consumers and businesses. It also strengthens the growing commercial relationship between our two countries,” Tiperu said.

The agreement also reflects Uganda’s broader export strategy of expanding beyond traditional markets and building direct links with emerging destinations.

Türkiye has increasingly emerged as a promising market for Ugandan coffee, driven by growing demand for specialty and origin-specific products.

Recent trade figures highlight this growth, with Uganda’s coffee exports to Türkiye rising sharply from about 2,304 bags in 2024 to approximately 15,037 bags in 2025, signalling strong market uptake.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Under Secretary Aacha Mary Orikiriza said the partnership reflects Uganda’s commitment to strengthening market access through direct engagement between producers and international buyers.

“Uganda is strengthening its presence in emerging coffee markets through partnerships that create direct engagement between producers, buyers, and consumers. This collaboration with Kafe Kavil is an important step in expanding market access for Ugandan coffee,” she said.

Officials say Uganda’s ability to supply both Arabica and Robusta coffee year-round remains a key competitive advantage in the global market, offering consistency and quality that appeals to international buyers.

According to Gordon Katwirenabo, Assistant Commissioner for Quality Assurance and Value Addition, this dual production capacity enhances Uganda’s positioning in diverse global markets and strengthens its export competitiveness.

As global demand for specialty coffee continues to grow, Uganda is increasingly leveraging such partnerships to promote value addition, expand market access, and improve returns across the coffee value chain.

The Ankara partnership is expected to serve as a gateway for deeper engagement within Türkiye and the wider region, positioning Ugandan coffee as a premium, traceable, and culturally distinctive product on the international stage.
