The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has destroyed imported juice from South Africa worth 58.4 million shillings before tax.
The products expired from the custom warehouse after the importer failed to pay taxes.
At exact 2:00 Pm, the truck registration number UBA 538F was at Kiteezi landfill to offload the expired juice of all flavours from South Africa’s Ceres.
The residents thought the juice will be just dumped but unfortunately it was crushed to avoid the re-use.
The head of operation at UNBS James Karakure said the juice expired in 2016 while in the bonded warehouse.
He said the importer failed to pay the necessary taxes required.
The document of the products indicated the date of entry was 2015.
He cautioned the consumers to be vigilant about the expiry dates on products.
Uganda is still struggling with expired products on the market coupled with counterfeit and substandard products, but in 2019, the authority hopes to eliminate the biggest percent of such products on the market.
