The Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Chris Baryomunsi, on Monday dismissed claims that detained opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye was critically ill or denied access to medical care while in custody.
Speaking to journalists, Baryomunsi said Besigye had suffered from a minor diarrhoea illness, which was promptly treated by medical personnel at Luzira Prison.
“It is not true that he is seriously sick or that he is unable to access his personal doctors,” Baryomunsi stated.
“I have spoken to prison authorities and I have also personally spoken to his doctors, who include his own biological siblings.”
The minister confirmed that Besigye continues to receive medical attention and has access to family members listed as his next of kin.
He clarified that Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, is not included among those listed, which Baryomunsi described as an internal family matter.
“The individuals listed as next of kin are permitted to bring Besigye food and remain in contact with him and his doctors,” he added.
Baryomunsi also addressed concerns about Besigye’s prison conditions. He said he had personally visited Besigye last year and rejected claims that he was being held in degrading circumstances. According to the minister, Besigye’s accommodation is self-contained and includes access to television.
While acknowledging public concern over Besigye’s detention, Baryomunsi urged both his lawyers and the state to expedite court proceedings, emphasizing the importance of a fair and timely trial.
Besigye’s detention has drawn criticism from opposition leaders and human rights organizations, who have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and treatment while in custody.
