The Uganda Media Council (UMC) responded promptly, issuing a statement signed by Chairman Paulo Ekochu expressing deep concern over the arrest.
The council urged authorities to ensure Ssenkumba’s immediate release and the return of his professional tools, emphasizing that these are essential for his work.
Acknowledging the sensitive political climate, the UMC called on security agencies to exercise restraint and respect journalists’ duties under the law.
“We urge all security agencies to respect the duties of journalists within the framework of the law,” the statement read.
The council also reminded media practitioners to cover events responsibly and professionally, particularly during tense periods, balancing accurate reporting with the need to maintain public order.
Ekochu underscored UMC’s commitment to dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders to safeguard media freedom while promoting national harmony.
