Sunscreen: The Truth Behind  Sunglasses

Ugandans are exposed to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation year-round due to the country’s equatorial location. While many associate sunscreen with lighter skin tones or beach holidays, it’s essential for all skin types including darker complexions to prevent premature aging.

UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin, are the main culprits behind fine lines, wrinkles, and tired-looking skin. These rays are constant throughout the day and can pass through clouds and windows, silently accelerating skin aging even indoors.

UVB rays, though more intense during midday, cause surface damage like sunburn and uneven pigmentation. Over time, repeated exposure without protection leads to dullness, loss of elasticity, and patchy skin tone.

Sunscreen acts as a barrier, shielding the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily even on cloudy days, helps preserve youthful skin, reduce discoloration and maintain a smooth, vibrant appearance.

“Every minute you spend unprotected in the sun is quietly adding up damage. This can start to show immediately, but that can appear later. Sunscreen isn’t just another step in your routine; it’s one of the most important elements of the routine. That’s why daily use, even on cloudy days, is non-negotiable.” Dr. Chirag Kotecha, Lead Specialist at Refine Skin & Body Clinic.

He adds that in Uganda’s climate, where sun exposure is unavoidable, sunscreen is not a luxury but a practical tool for long-term skin health. Whether you're walking to work, farming, or commuting in traffic, protecting your skin ensures it stays resilient, radiant and refreshed for years to come.

Daily sunscreen use is one of the most effective ways to prevent premature aging. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher protects against UV rays that cause wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and even skin cancer. Think of it as your skin’s daily armor and not just on your face but your neck and arms need attention too.

“However, just like you mind what ingest, you must mind what goes on your skin. Lots of fake or expired sunscreens that can be very damaging to your skin are on the market”. Dr. Kotecha warns.

He advises that genuine skin products like sunscreen ought to be got from credible dermatology clinics like Refine Skin & Body Clinic.
