In Uganda, skin lightening creams are widely used to treat dark spots, uneven tone, and hyperpigmentation. But how do they actually work? Dr. Chirag Kotecha, the Lead Specialist at Refine Skin & Body Clinic explains.
These creams reduce the skin’s natural pigment - called melanin - by slowing down the cells that produce it. Ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, and arbutin are common. Dr. Kotecha adds that some products also contain exfoliants like retinoids or fruit acids to remove dead skin and reveal brighter layers underneath.
“While results can be visible, not all creams are safe!” Dr. Kotecha warns.
Some contain unregulated steroids, which can damage the skin and lead to long-term health problems and overuse may cause thinning skin, irritation, or rebound darkening. Or Mercury, which in serious cases can be absorbed through the skin and cause Kidney damage, cause tremors & memory loss and cause fetal defects in expectant mothers.
Dr. Kotecha warns that lightening creams should be used with professional guidance - especially for sensitive skin or stubborn pigmentation. Safer options include gentle brightening agents, sunscreen, and targeted treatments for conditions like melasma.
He advises that before starting any skin lightening routine, consult a certified skin specialist. “Your skin deserves care, not risk. In the Ugandan sun, protection and expert advice go hand in hand.”
