The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on parents to treat all their children with dignity and without discrimination, including those living with disabilities.
His message was delivered by the Deputy Speaker of the Buganda Lukiiko, Ahmed Lwasa, during celebrations marking the Buganda Day for Persons with Disabilities, held under the theme “We are all responsible for matters concerning persons with disabilities.”
In his address, the Katikkiro urged parents to pay close attention to children studying in inclusive schools and ensure they receive proper medical care.
He encouraged families to involve children with disabilities in everyday activities such as gardening, sports, and even leadership or political engagements, saying this builds confidence, independence, and overall development.
He noted that the Kingdom continuously monitors the welfare of persons with disabilities through its leadership structures down to the county level—a strategy that has already yielded positive results.
The Katikkiro also encouraged persons with disabilities to take advantage of development programs, including coffee farming and government education initiatives, to improve their livelihoods.
He urged them to obtain government-issued disability identification cards from their sub-counties and actively engage with leaders responsible for disability affairs.
The Minister for Social Development, Hajjat Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo, emphasized society’s shared responsibility in ensuring the welfare of persons with disabilities.
She urged parents to safeguard children with disabilities, particularly girls who face heightened vulnerability to abuse. She also appealed to government authorities to enforce accessibility laws requiring public buildings to accommodate persons with disabilities, enabling easier movement and work.
Representing the Minister for Local Government, Commissioner Muhumuza Prosper praised the Buganda Kingdom for its efforts in sensitizing communities and empowering families to prevent disability where possible.
During the event, the Mukisa Foundation donated ten wheelchairs to support persons with disabilities and enhance their mobility in daily life.
The ceremony attracted several dignitaries from the Buganda Kingdom, including Ahmed Lwasa, Hajjat Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo, Hajj Amisi Kakomo, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, Oweek. Gertrude Ssebuggwawo (Kkooki County Chief Administrator), Nakazzi Fatuma Kakande (Chairperson, Board of Social Development), Eng. Sulaiman Mayanja (Chairperson, Advisory Council), and Mr. Busuulwa Asuman (Chairperson, Buganda Disability Council), alongside politicians and other invited guests.
The event reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting equality, inclusion, and dignity for persons with disabilities across Buganda.
