Uganda has welcomed eight southern white rhinos from South Africa, marking a significant boost to the country’s conservation efforts and long-term tourism potential.

The rhinos arrived at Entebbe International Airport at 2:30am on Monday and were immediately transported to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola, where they will undergo quarantine and acclimatisation.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the first rhino had officially set foot at Ziwa.

“The first rhino has touched the ground at Ziwa. Keep following for more updates,” UWA announced.

The four male and four female rhinos were donated by African Parks from the Munyawana Conservancy in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Their arrival brings Uganda’s total rhino population to 59—all of which live under dedicated protection.

Representing the Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Director of Tourism Dr. Basil Ajer hailed the moment as a testament to the country’s strengthening conservation systems.

“We are optimistic about the steady growth of Uganda’s rhino population. This is a significant step in rebuilding and strengthening our conservation efforts,” Dr. Ajer said.

UWA’s Acting Executive Director and Commissioner for Biodiversity Management, John Makombo, welcomed the new arrivals and underscored the Authority’s commitment to their welfare.

“This is an important moment for Uganda’s conservation journey. We remain committed to ensuring these rhinos receive the best care and long-term protection,” Makombo noted.

UWA spokesperson Bashir Hangi shared images of the convoy escorting the animals from Entebbe to Ziwa, capturing the excitement of the transfer.

“From the Rainbow Nation to the Pearl of Africa. Eight rhinos are on their way from Entebbe airport to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Their arrival brings the total number of rhinos in Uganda to 59,” he said.

The donation is a major boost to Uganda’s Rhino Restoration Programme, which seeks to reintroduce rhinos to their historical ranges.

Plans are already underway to move some rhinos from Ziwa to Kidepo Valley National Park and Ajai Wildlife Reserve as part of a long-term strategy to establish breeding populations across multiple protected areas.

African Parks representative Martine Rickelton said the contribution reflects shared dedication to safeguarding Uganda’s wildlife heritage.

“This donation supports Uganda’s ambition to re-establish rhinos across more protected areas. We are proud to be part of this conservation effort,” she said.

For now, the eight rhinos will undergo close veterinary monitoring at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary before joining broader restoration initiatives.
