The leadership of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has hailed Wazalendo SACCO for its continued role in strengthening the financial stability and socio-economic welfare of soldiers and their families.

The commendation was delivered by the Chief of Staff – Air Force, Brig Gen David Gonyi, who represented the Chief of Joint Staff at the launch of the SACCO’s 13th cash operating branch in Nansana Municipality.

Brig Gen Gonyi said Wazalendo had grown into a central pillar of financial inclusion within the defence community, backed by a disciplined saving culture and accessible credit facilities.

He reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to improving the welfare of officers and militants and noted that the SACCO would maintain its cooperative identity rather than transition into a commercial bank.

Speaking on behalf of the Board Chairman, Vice Chairman Col Allan Kitanda thanked the UPDF leadership for its consistent support and endorsement of the decision to preserve Wazalendo’s status.

He urged members to deepen their participation and involve their families so the institution can grow into the largest SACCO on the continent.

Col Kitanda noted that Wazalendo is marking 20 years of operations this year, attributing its growth to the guidance of the UPDF leadership, dedicated staff, and loyal members who continue to entrust it with their savings.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Col Yusuf Magero Buha said the new Nansana branch was established to decongest the Kampala branch and bring services closer to members.

He emphasised the need to recruit more family members to reinforce financial inclusion and ensure long-term sustainability.

He also asked the UPDF leadership to provide guidance on handling retired personnel who later join other SACCOs, noting the potential impact on performance.

Col Buha added that Wazalendo has intensified member training before loan access to promote responsible borrowing, keep loan costs manageable and increase participation across all units.

Director of Operations Mr William Atalyeba said the former Kakiri branch—now under Nansana—will continue operating as a liaison office and urged the new branch manager to uphold high service standards.

Before the year ends, Wazalendo is expected to launch the Kibibi Cash Branch, commission the Lira Cash Branch and open a liaison office in Kabong.
