unyiiro Primary School in Iganga has received new toilets from the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), supported by the Community Chest of Korea, in a move aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene for learners.
The installation of the new facilities is expected to greatly benefit pupils and staff by creating a safer and healthier learning environment.
The project forms part of broader efforts to upgrade the school’s infrastructure and enhance the wellbeing of children.
According to the headmistress, Hajara Harriet Kibwika, the new sanitation block delivers a hygienic, gender-sensitive facility designed to reduce open defecation, improve attendance and protect learners’ dignity, particularly for girls.
She said the school welcomed the development, noting that good sanitation is essential to a productive learning environment.
The school administration expressed gratitude to the donors and partners who made the project possible and expressed hope that it would attract further support for ongoing development needs.
The wider initiative anticipates signing additional Memoranda of Understanding to support capacity building, WASH awareness campaigns and the construction of more handwashing facilities with water filters.
Officials say these interventions will be embedded within local systems to ensure long-term sustainability.
“These WASH investments are a practical demonstration of our partnership with the Government of Uganda and the people of Iganga,” said Dohoon Kim, Acting Country Representative of the KOFIH Uganda Office.
The Busoga WASH Project operates under a Memorandum of Understanding signed on January 21, 2025, between the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda and KOFIH.
It enables close collaboration with Iganga District Local Government, Jinja City, health facilities and schools to reduce the burden of waterborne disease across the region.
“We deeply value our collaboration with the Government of Uganda and Iganga District,” said Sang-hoon Jung, Senior Advisor and Health Program Specialist.
“Together, we are laying the groundwork for healthier communities and a stronger friendship between the people of the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Uganda.”
