The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Department of Production has taken a major step toward modernising its agricultural practices following a high-level field demonstration held at the Kabamba Army Farm.

The event featured Jo Min Kim, a visiting professor from the University of Tokyo, who showcased cutting-edge innovations designed to boost crop resilience and increase farm productivity.

The Chief Coordinator of the UPDF Department of Production, Major General Sam Kiwanuka, described the visit as a significant milestone in the force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen food self-reliance.

He noted that agriculture remains central to the welfare of soldiers, yet it continues to face challenges, particularly unpredictable weather patterns that disrupt consistent food production.

“Despite these setbacks, our department has remained committed to ensuring food stability within the force. Our interventions have helped maintain stable prices for maize and other essential food items nationwide, reinforcing both national and internal food security,” Kiwanuka said.

During his presentation, Kim introduced Skepper Technology, an advanced agricultural innovation designed to shield crops from extreme heat and drought—conditions that frequently threaten harvests across the region.

“Skepper Technology can save almost any type of plant during drought. It will enable the UPDF to safeguard yields, reduce water usage, and minimise labour costs. With time, it has the potential to significantly enhance the UPDF’s capacity to produce high volumes of food in support of its operations,” he said.

The Head of Production, Maj JB Kawuki, emphasised the urgency of adopting modern technologies to address emerging agricultural challenges.

“We expect Kim’s technology to enhance our output and improve our resilience in drought-prone areas. This demonstration at Kabamba Farm provides an opportunity to compare the performance of Skepper Technology with our traditional farming practices and determine its potential for large-scale adoption,” Kawuki said.

The event was attended by staff officers from the Department of Production, who expressed optimism about integrating innovative methods to improve efficiency and sustainability within UPDF agricultural units.
