Kampala – The Buganda Kingdom has stepped up efforts to curb domestic violence, calling on couples and parents to prioritize honesty, transparency, patience, and mutual respect in their households.
The appeal was made during a community training session held at Namungoona Parents Junior School, which attracted more than 100 residents from Namungoona and surrounding areas.
The workshop focused on understanding the causes of domestic violence, its impact on families, and practical strategies for prevention.
Participants engaged in open discussions, case studies, and group activities aimed at enhancing harmonious co-existence within homes.
Delivering a message on behalf of the Minister for Gender in the Buganda Kingdom, Mariam Nkalubo Mayanja, the Kingdom’s Gender Coordinator, Peter Zzaake, emphasized that domestic peace begins with individuals cultivating goodwill at home.
He urged couples to communicate openly, support one another through challenges, and maintain positive intentions toward their partners.
“Domestic violence can be prevented if we prioritize honesty, openness, and goodwill in our relationships,” the message read.
“Couples should strive to listen to one another and solve challenges together rather than letting them escalate.”
Lead trainer Ms Florence Nakaweesa Mubiru reinforced the Kingdom’s message, highlighting the importance of understanding, patience, and respect in marriage. She encouraged couples to value each other’s opinions and treat one another with dignity to foster trust.
Mrs. Nakaweesa also advised parents to provide appropriate guidance to children, cautioning that excessive freedom without supervision can lead to indiscipline and erosion of respect for parental authority.
Participants welcomed the initiative, applauding the Kingdom for addressing domestic violence at the community level.
They called for similar trainings across other areas, noting that informed families are better positioned to build stable, violence-free homes.
The Buganda Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to promoting family harmony through ongoing awareness campaigns and community engagements, aiming to strengthen responsibility, respect, and well-being in households.
