Residents have been urged to embrace and preserve their cultural heritage rather than abandon traditional practices due to misconceptions that they are incompatible with religious beliefs.
The call was made by Busujju County Chief, Israel Lubega Maaso, during a traditional introduction ceremony held at Matte Village in Mityana District, where Edward Ddungu Nyonyi Ntono, the Kabaka’s representative for Sabaddu-Malangala Sub-county, officially introduced his wife, Victoria, to family, friends and invited guests.
Speaking at the function, Lubega emphasised the importance of cultural identity in strengthening communities and preserving Buganda’s heritage.
“Our culture is a valuable part of who we are. People should not abandon their traditions simply because they are misled into believing that cultural practices are evil. Culture and good values help preserve our identity and unity as a people,” he said.
The ceremony attracted a large number of guests, including government officials, Buganda Kingdom leaders, religious leaders and members of the local community who gathered to celebrate the couple and witness the important cultural event.
While addressing guests, Busujju County Member of Parliament David Kalwanga congratulated the newlyweds and encouraged the groom to uphold his responsibilities within marriage.
“Marriage requires commitment, responsibility and mutual respect. A husband should support and value his wife so that their family can thrive,” Kalwanga said.
The legislator also reflected on the recently concluded elections, urging Ugandans to remain united despite political differences.
“Elections come and go, and disagreements may arise during the process, but citizens should not allow politics to divide them. We must continue living together peacefully and work towards the development of our communities,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Hajji Kamoga appealed to young people to appreciate the institution of marriage and family life, describing it as one of the pillars that uphold Buganda’s cultural values and social stability.
“Young people should embrace responsible family life. Marriage remains one of the important foundations that preserve our cultural values and strengthen society,” he said.
The colourful ceremony featured traditional customs, cultural performances and messages centred on family values, cultural preservation and community unity.
Guests praised the couple for choosing to celebrate their union through a traditional introduction ceremony, describing it as an important way of preserving Buganda’s customs and passing them on to future generations.
