Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) will review proposals to establish a legal framework for social media use across East African Community (EAC) member states.
George Odongo, leader of the EALA Uganda Chapter, announced the plans during a press briefing on Monday, ahead of the assembly’s second meeting of the fourth session of the fifth assembly, scheduled in Kampala from November 24 to December 4, 2025.
Odongo said discussions will focus on “the development of regional policy and a legal framework for the regulation and promotion of responsible use of social media,” as part of broader efforts to foster peace and unity among member states.
“We are here in Kampala to conduct our rotational plenary meetings. Rotational meetings in our partner states go a long way in bringing our community closer to our people, as well as fostering and deepening our regional integration agenda,” Odongo said.
The assembly will also consider motions on promoting cross-border trade harmony among EAC member states.
Additionally, EALA members are expected to discuss “adoption and implementation of regional industrialization and value addition frameworks to reduce the export of raw materials,” aimed at ensuring producers benefit more while expanding the region’s tax base.
The discussions signal EALA’s growing focus on harmonizing policies across the EAC to support responsible digital engagement, economic growth, and regional cooperation.
