The Minister for Gender in the Buganda Kingdom, Hajjat Mariam Nkalubo Mayanja, led a gathering of leaders of persons with disabilities in Mawokota County, Butoolo, on Saturday, advocating for greater inclusion and empowerment of people living with disabilities.
In her address, Nkalubo urged leaders of persons with disabilities across Mawokota to conduct comprehensive surveys to document the number of individuals living with disabilities, categorised by type and support received.
She explained that these statistics will guide the Kingdom’s planning and development strategies aimed at improving the welfare of all citizens under the Kabaka’s leadership.
Highlighting her grassroots leadership approach, Nkalubo engaged participants in interactive sessions, discussing practical strategies to ensure persons with disabilities are fully included in community life.
The Chief of Mawokota County, Hajj Hassan Kagga Kasujja, also addressed the gathering, urging parents to provide equal opportunities for children with disabilities rather than isolating or overprotecting them.
He said inclusion is critical for enabling children with disabilities to thrive alongside their peers.
Betty Kinene, Head of the District Persons with Disabilities, reported on ongoing initiatives to enhance leadership and representation for persons with disabilities.
While acknowledging support from various institutions, she noted that communities still face challenges in fully empowering and integrating persons with disabilities, underscoring the need for sustained advocacy and practical interventions.
Nkalubo concluded the event by encouraging all stakeholders to actively participate in creating a more inclusive society, where persons with disabilities are recognized, supported, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to the development of Mawokota and the Buganda Kingdom.
