Fisheries Unit Returns Impounded Fishing Gear to Kikuube Community
The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) has ordered the release of confiscated fishing equipment and relaxed operations on Lake Albert in Kikuube, linking the move to support for President Yoweri Museveni and NRM flag bearers, raising concerns over conditional enforcement of law.

The Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) has directed its officers in Kikuube District to return confiscated illegal fishing gear, including nets, boats, engines, and motorcycles, to local fishermen, while relaxing enforcement during the ongoing election season.

However, the directive was tied to the fishermen’s pledge to support President Museveni and NRM flag bearers.

Lt. Colonel Mercy Tukahirwa, FPU boss, issued the orders during a security meeting convened by State Minister for Public Service Grace Mary Mugasa at Bugoma landing site.

The meeting was attended by Kikuube district leaders, the fishing community, and Kikuube UPDF cluster head Brigadier General Tingira Irumba.

Tukahirwa instructed FPU officers to stop arresting and detaining fishermen, and to release all impounded equipment and previously detained individuals.

She told the community: “For the good of President Museveni, the flag bearers, and our people, let's relax our operations. We are going to remain on the waters but we have forgiven you. Now that you love our president, why not love yourselves and reclaim your property?”

Addressing concerns over attacks by Congolese militias, Tukahirwa said the fishermen’s reports had been forwarded to President Museveni, and that additional UPDF personnel would be deployed on the lake to enhance security.

She also announced that the government had approved Sh1 billion to support income-generation initiatives for the fishing community.

State Minister Mugasa reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of fishermen and enhancing security on Lake Albert to counter militia attacks.

Kikuube District Woman MP Florence Natumanya and district chair Peter Banura welcomed the FPU directive, noting it would restore peace and stability on the lake.

However, Kikuube Resident District Commissioner Godwin Angalia cautioned the fishermen to adhere to regulations and use their pardon responsibly.

Robert Jungiera, chairperson of the Silverfish Fishing Association, confirmed the community’s commitment to support President Museveni and NRM flag bearers in the upcoming elections.
