The  Banyole cultural institution was actualized in 2017 when a council of elders decided to have one leader from among themselves.

In 2019, Professor Elly Chomi Wesana was elected as the Bunyole Cultural leader after defeating his sole challenger Benedict Muyagu of the Balwa clan.

However, Wesana is yet to start his duties as a cultural leader since government through the Ministry of Gender is yet to gazette him due to a faction which is against him.

The faction pays allegiance to Martin Hayinja, who was first elected the cultural leader but rejected by a section of clan leaders.

On Friday, the NRM district chairman for Butaleja,Moses Pabire made an appeal to President Museveni to consider gazetting the Bunyole cultural leader.

“We can have our identity can come if Bunyole cultural institution is gazetted. We need to foster unity and that can happen with elders in the cultural institution,”Pabire said.

The president promised to tarmac the major roads in Butaleja, noting a delay in working on the Nabumali–Butaleja–Namutumba Road and the Tororo–Nagongera–Busolwe Road.

“Now we have secured the funds, and the contractor has already been identified. These roads would have been completed earlier if priorities were handled properly. Let’s learn how to plan and execute effectively,” he said.

“When people bring too many things into the budget at the same time, important projects get scattered. Members of Parliament and the population must understand that you cannot pursue everything at once,” he emphasized.

On clean water, Museveni said the district is performing well, with 418 villages representing 94% out of the 443 that make up Butaleja having access to clean water.

On health, he said: “For the 15 sub-counties here, one has a covenant district hospital, one has a Health Centre IV, and 11 have Health Centre IIIs. Only two sub-counties lack Health Centre IIIs.”

He said these will also get in the new term.

Museveni however urged the population to embrace his four acre farming model whereas one acre is for coffee, another for fruits, then pasture together with zero-grazing cows, and the fourth acre for family food, poultry in the backyard, piggery , and fish farming near wetlands.

“These activities provide both income and food security. People who have interpreted our message are now doing well,” he said.
