Nakaseke South MP, Paulson Luttamaguzi Ssemakula, has said that remaining in the Democratic Party (DP) under the leadership of Norbert Mao would have ended his political career.
Speaking on Sanyuka Television on Thursday, Luttamaguzi accused the current DP leadership of working closely with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
“DP leadership is a sub-component of the NRM party,” he said. “I was wise enough to see what was most likely to happen through my political lens, and I made the right decision at the right time. Most actors in DP are purely NRM agents.”
Luttamaguzi added that staying in the party when its president supports President Museveni would have been disastrous for his political future.
“Imagine if I had stayed in DP when the party president, Mao, supports Museveni, I would have committed political suicide,” he said.
In 2020, during the rise of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Luttamaguzi was among ten DP Members of Parliament who officially joined Robert Kyagulanyi’s (Bobi Wine’s) NUP, leaving Mao’s DP with only five MPs in Parliament at the time.
Since then, Luttamaguzi has become a vocal member of the opposition and an outspoken critic of the government.
He is set to defend his parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections on the NUP ticket.
