Uganda's global influence and commitment to conservation have received a significant boost, with the country being elected to the UNESCO Executive Board.
Represented by Dr. James Musinguzi, Executive Director of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and Mr. John Makombo, Commissioner for Biodiversity Management, Uganda joins six other African nations in this prestigious role.
"Uganda has been elected to the UNESCO Executive Board during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan," the Uganda Embassy in Paris announced. "This milestone underscores Uganda's commitment to advancing education, science, culture, and heritage on the global stage."
The election, which took place on November 7, 2025, gives Uganda a seat in the organisation's key decision-making body, allowing it to influence global initiatives and promote African priorities in education, culture, and scientific development.
Uganda secured its seat in Electoral Group V(a) with 162 votes, alongside Zimbabwe, Zambia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Equatorial Guinea.
The 43rd UNESCO General Conference, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, brings together representatives from 193 Member States to discuss the organisation's future priorities and initiatives.
