The administration and pupils of St Peters and Paul Nursery and Primary School in Buhanika, Hoima city, were left in shock on Monday afternoon after a heavy storm blew off the roof of a four-classroom block that also houses the school offices.
Head teacher Deogratius Bagonza said the rain began at 1 p.m. before intensifying into a strong storm that caused the damage.
The affected block accommodates Primary Four, Five, Six, and Seven classes, as well as the school offices. Fortunately, P.7 candidates were absent as the school is not an exam centre.
Bagonza reported that 11 pupils were affected by the incident. They were immediately taken to Buhanika Health Centre III for treatment.
Ten have since been discharged with medication, while one sustained serious injuries and was referred to Hoima Referral Hospital with suspected fractures.
Moses Eguma, Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association, called on parents to remain calm and appealed to well-wishers for assistance to repair the roof.
The school is Catholic-founded under Iguramaiso Catholic Church, Buhanika.
Councilor Lawrence Katwesige, Nyakambugu Ward and Hoima City East councilor, attributed the damage to the cutting down of surrounding trees that previously acted as windbreakers.
He said efforts are underway to replant trees to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
