Heavy rains have triggered deadly landslides across the Sebei sub-region, leaving at least 20 people confirmed dead and several homes destroyed, authorities said.
Rescue operations continue amid fears the death toll could rise as more areas are reached.
Fresh landslides struck Kwanua Village, Kapteka Parish I, Chesower Sub-county in Bukwo District early this morning, burying dozens under mud and debris.
So far, only two bodies—identified as eight-year-old Kiptoo Abraham and ten-year-old Emmanuel Kiprop, children of Simon Musobo—have been recovered.
Rescue teams, joined by local residents, are still digging through the rubble in a desperate search for survivors.
In Kapchorwa District, at least four more bodies were recovered, bringing the regional death toll to over 10 in areas already hit by the heavy rains.
Several homes have been completely destroyed, and residents have lost property worth millions, including household items and livestock such as cows, pigs, and goats buried under the mud.
“All household items, animals, crops, all gone,” said Ivan James Namoma, Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bukwo.
The Kapchorwa–Suam Road, a key route linking Uganda to Kenya, has been cut off after the Suam River burst its banks, leaving travelers stranded.
“Right from Kapchorwa to Kween to Bukwo, roads have been cut off in several places by big stones,” Namoma added.
District leaders are appealing for urgent government support to help recover bodies and assist displaced families.
Peter Swilikei Kissa, the Sebei Cultural Leader, warned, “The rains are just beginning, so we still expect more landslides in the sub-region. If government can help us resettle people living in risky areas, it would really help us.”
Authorities are urging residents, especially those in high-risk zones, to remain on high alert as the rains continue, while rescue operations persist across the affected districts.
