Parliament on Tuesday mourned the passing of Bishop Charles Martin Wamika, former Bishop of Jinja Diocese, who died on October 22, 2025, at the age of 72.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa led the condolence messages, describing the late bishop as a pillar of development, education, and poverty reduction in Jinja.
Bishop Wamika devoted his life to serving God and the people of Uganda.
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Tororo in 1993 and later became Bishop of Jinja in 2010.
Throughout his ministry, he was recognized for his unwavering commitment to his faith and community.
During the parliamentary tribute, Tayebwa said, “Bishop Wamika was a strong pillar of development, education, and poverty reduction in Jinja.”
He added that the bishop’s legacy continues to inspire many in the region.
The late bishop’s body was received by the Tororo Diocese on October 25, 2025, and a series of Masses were held in his honour.
The Requiem Mass took place at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Nyangole in Tororo before the body was taken to his home parish in Budaka for burial.
Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo of Tororo praised Bishop Wamika for his youthful exuberance and boundless joy, saying, “Even in the final years, Bishop Wamika and I would greet each other like young boys, filled with the joy of God's presence. That youthful exuberance, that boundless joy, is what we must remember him for.”
Bishop Wamika’s funeral was attended by hundreds of people who paid their last respects, reflecting the profound impact he had on his community.
The late prelate was buried on Tuesday at the cathedral in Jinja City.
