Former Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde has been duly nominated to contest for the Mawokota North parliamentary seat, marking her return to active politics after several years away. Kyambadde is seeking to unseat incumbent MP Hillary Kiyaga of the National Unity Platform in the forthcoming 12th Parliament.

The nomination exercise was confirmed by Mpigi District Returning Officer, Everrest Twinomujuzi, who said the process went smoothly.

“All the candidates met the requirements, were well-organised, and there were no issues. We encourage them to keep calm and observe the campaign guidelines,” Twinomujuzi said.

According to the Electoral Commission, 17 candidates have so far been nominated in Mpigi District, four for Mawokota North, six for Mawokota South, and seven for the District Woman MP seat. Campaigns are expected to officially kick off on November 10.

Kyambadde, who was escorted by former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, expressed optimism about reclaiming the constituency for the ruling National Resistance Movement.

“Many of the projects I initiated stalled. Service delivery has been poor, and at some points I had to step in to rescue hospitals. I am back to serve Mawokota North and ensure continuity and progress,” she said.

She added that the NRM is determined to reclaim all three parliamentary seats in Mpigi District Mawokota North, Mawokota South, and the District Woman MP seat which are currently held by the opposition NUP and FDC.

The race in Mawokota North is expected to be one of the most closely watched in Mpigi, Kyambadde is set to meet her Supporters at Kammengo as she waits to officially start conversing for votes.
