The Lango Cultural Institution, under the leadership of the Paramount Chief Won Nyaci Dr. Eng. Michael Moses Odong Okune, has paid glowing tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a visionary statesman, a defender of democracy, and a true Pan-Africanist whose influence transcended borders and generations.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the High Commission of Kenya in Kampala on Friday morning, Dr. Odong Okune expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Odinga, whom he referred to as “a man who embodied the very essence of African resilience.”
“The late Raila Odinga was not merely a politician,” Dr. Odong Okune said. “He was a visionary statesman, a steadfast defender of democracy, a lover of peace, and a true Pan-Africanist whose legacy will live on across generations.”
The Paramount Chief noted that the Lango people stand in solidarity with the Luo community of Kenya and the entire nation during this period of mourning. He urged Kenyans and Africans at large to emulate Odinga’s values of perseverance, unity, and peaceful leadership.
“As the Lango Cultural Institution, we recognize Raila Odinga as a man who never surrendered to oppression, who walked the long and often lonely road of reform, and who believed deeply in the transformative power of the people,” Dr. Odong Okune added.
“His journey from struggle to statesmanship is a testament to his indomitable spirit and his unwavering commitment to liberty and national cohesion.”
The Paramount Chief further described the late Odinga as more than a political leader, saying he was also a cultural pillar, a custodian of heritage, and a proud son of Africa who carried the values, rhythms, and wisdom of his people wherever he went.
Odinga’s lifelong advocacy for multiparty democracy, equitable development, and social justice, Dr. Odong Okune said, will continue to serve as a guiding light for future generations.
“His sacrifices, though often painful, were never in vain for they sowed the seeds of a freer, more united Kenya,” he remarked.
The Lango delegation to the Kenyan High Commission was led by Minister Francis Ogwanga, in charge of Lango Cultural Affairs. The Assistant High Commissioner of Kenya to Uganda, Amb. Dr. Suleiman Roba, received the team and commended the cultural institution for their heartfelt show of solidarity and respect.
Amb. Roba lauded the Lango Cultural Institution for standing with the people of Kenya during their moment of grief, describing the gesture as a reflection of deep-rooted cultural brotherhood and East African unity.
