Residents of Butebo District have voiced growing concerns over a lack of essential services, including the absence of a community radio station, poor health infrastructure, failing education systems, and deteriorating roads.

These grievances were brought directly to Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential flag bearer, during his mobilisation tour in the region.

Kyagulanyi, also known by his stage name Bobi Wine, spent Monday engaging with residents and rallying support for his second presidential bid, vowing to deliver a “new Uganda” if elected in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

He was accompanied by local leaders and party mobilisers including John Baptist Nambeshe, NUP’s Deputy President for Eastern Uganda. Residents told the delegation that many of these challenges have persisted since 2017, when Butebo was carved out of Pallisa District.

They reported being evicted from the swamp lands where they previously cultivated rice, resulting in significant economic setbacks. Others expressed frustration over the lack of a dedicated minister for the area, saying they feel forgotten by the current government.

“We need representation that speaks to our issues. We've been left behind,” said Mukomba Isaac, one of the local voices calling for change.

Addressing the residents, Kyagulanyi emphasised that the 2026 election represents a pivotal moment for Uganda. He told the people of Butebo that they would be better off if only the government prioritised their welfare.

“You deserve better. You deserve leaders who serve you not those who exploit you,” Kyagulanyi said. “The lines have been drawn. 2026 is not just another election—it is a mission.”

He assured residents that he would return to Butebo not just as a visitor, but as President of a transformed Uganda.

After his engagement in Butebo, Kyagulanyi proceeded to Budaka District, navigating through the dusty roads of Kabwangasi town, waving to enthusiastic supporters who had lined the streets, closely watched by a heavy security presence.

Kyagulanyi made a brief stop over in Ikiki and talked to residents.

In Budaka, he reiterated his promise to transform household incomes and revamp the education sector, urging voters to rally behind NUP in the coming polls.

“We are not just seeking power; we are seeking to return power to the people,” Kyagulanyi told the cheering crowds.

Despite the warm reception, the two districts remain National Resistance Movement (NRM) strongholds. In the 2021 general elections, the ruling party secured over 60% of the presidential vote in both Butebo and Budaka, sweeping nearly all MP and local government seats.

However, the NUP principal remains optimistic, banking on the rising discontent and youth-driven energy across the Eastern region to turn the tide.

Kyagulanyi is expected to resume his campaign trail on Tuesday, heading to Kibuku and Butaleja districts as part of his wider Eastern Uganda mobilisation.
