The government has announced the long-awaited resumption of stalled road construction projects across Uganda after a three-year delay, following the release of funds through a supplementary budget.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Bageya Waiswa, said priority has been placed on key roads such as Mityana–Mubende and Kyegegwa, which are critical for transport connectivity and the movement of goods and services.

This follows a closed-door meeting between ministry officials and contractors, during which the government assured them that resources have been secured to restart projects.

“We have received resources worth 500 billion shillings after cabinet approved a supplementary budget, and the Ministry of Finance has also agreed to offload money for the third and fourth quarters,” Bageya said.

He acknowledged that budget cuts and delayed payments had undermined progress but cautioned contractors against using this as an excuse for substandard work.

He also advised them to avoid turning to moneylenders, assuring that pending payments would be effected by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, the President of the Uganda National Association of Builders, Suppliers and Engineering Contractors, Kiara Binta Nkuranga, confirmed that confidence among contractors had been restored after government pledged to clear arrears owed to about 450 companies.

“We have been assured that the money is coming, and this has restored confidence among contractors to return to work,” Nkuranga said.

The resumption of these projects is expected to ease transport challenges and boost trade in regions where stalled works had crippled road access.
