Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama has warned Ugandan youth against abusing social media. He said spreading lies, defamation, and incitement threatens peace and stability as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
He was addressing youth leaders and students from universities, tertiary institutions, and local councils.
The session was part of the inaugural Peace Ambassadors training workshop in Kampala. The event was organised by the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders.
Byabakama urged young people to reflect on their online conduct.
“What are you posting on social media? Is it constructive or destructive? Does it add value to peace and stability during elections, or does it incite violence and chaos?” he asked.
He reminded them that the Commission views youth as key players in the democratic process. He urged them to act as ambassadors of peace.
Byabakama also cautioned against political violence. He said it worsens unemployment and undermines development. He advised youth to use dialogue and lawful channels to raise grievances, including approaching the Commission directly.
“Don’t say your chairman is not accessible. If you have issues, come to the Commission. Together, we can address challenges they are not insurmountable,” he said.
The EC boss stressed that Uganda’s future depends on peaceful elections.
“Uganda will be or not be on account of the role you play. Without peace, nothing else can stand. It is a must that we first have peaceful elections,” Byabakama stated.
