East Ruwenzori Diocese Marks 16 Years of Growth and Transformation
The Diocese of East Ruwenzori celebrated 16 years of ministry and community service with a thanksgiving ceremony at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Kamwenge, highlighting achievements in education, health, and economic empowerment.

The Diocese of East Rwenzori marked 16 years of ministry and service with a grand thanksgiving celebration on Sunday at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Kamwenge.

The event was presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, who commended the diocese for its remarkable progress in ministry, education, health, and economic empowerment.

“We thank God for the tremendous progress made by the diocese, including 70 primary schools, 10 secondary schools, vocational institutions, and a Diocesan Health Centre III now serving the community,” Kaziimba said.

He also praised clergy education, noting that priests now hold diplomas, degrees, master’s degrees, and even doctorates.

“The Diocese has also invested in economic empowerment through commercial buildings, 20 acres of coffee, and 15 acres of cocoa as Diocesan projects for income generation,” he added.

From its humble beginnings in 2009 with only one vehicle, East Ruwenzori Diocese now boasts 16 vehicles and motorcycles to support mission work.

The Diocese has also built a modern Bishop’s residence, renovated St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and embarked on a mega project—a new multi-billion-shilling Cathedral expected to seat 5,000 people.

Bishop George Turyasingura expressed gratitude to Christians, political leaders, and business partners who have supported the diocese.

“This milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our clergy, laity, and partners. Together, we are building a diocese that is spiritually strong and economically sustainable,” he said.

Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, praised the Diocese for complementing government efforts in education and health.

“When the Church invests in schools and health centres, it uplifts communities and partners with government in service delivery. East Ruwenzori Diocese is a model of how faith institutions can transform society,” Tumwebaze said.

Archbishop Kaziimba also paid tribute to the first Bishop of the Diocese, Edward Bamucwanira, for laying a firm foundation, and to Maama Juliet Turyasingura for her dedicated support to the current Bishop.

The celebrations brought together Christians, government officials, and business leaders, all pledging continued support toward the completion of the new Cathedral and other Diocesan projects.
