The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, in partnership with GIZ-Uganda, has launched a new program to strengthen women-led businesses and promote sustainable, gender-sensitive working conditions.
The Kampala launch on Thursday brought together government officials, development partners, women entrepreneurs, and civil society stakeholders.
An exhibition showcased women’s innovations—from value-added agro-processing products to eco-friendly crafts—highlighting their role in driving Uganda’s green and inclusive growth.
“We are not just talking about empowering women economically; we are talking about empowering them sustainably,” said Betty Amongi, minister of gender,
Labour and Social Development. “The project helps women access bigger markets, green technologies, and safe, dignified working conditions.”
Representatives from GIZ and other partners also signed the WEEG-UWEP Strategy, a roadmap to enhance competitiveness, ensure business sustainability, and promote decent work in women-led enterprises.
The initiative will provide training in business management, access to eco-friendly technologies, and support for local and international market linkages.
It will also enforce gender-sensitive workplace standards to create safe environments free from harassment and discrimination.
