The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has received a crucial donation of digital security equipment from Defend Defenders, a regional human rights organization, to bolster its protection mechanisms amid increasing threats to its operations.
The handover ceremony took place this morning, with UHRC Chairperson and Commission Directors officially receiving the equipment from Defend Defenders’ Executive Director, Hassan Shire.
The donated items include computer laptops, printers, WiFi access points, remote control devices, backup drivers, CCTV cameras, and routers.
According to the UHRC Chairperson, Mariam Wangadya the nature of the Commission’s work is highly sensitive and demands both physical and digital safeguards.
She commended Defend Defenders for recognizing this need and responding with timely support that enhances the Commission’s ability to protect data and ensure operational security.
“What Defend Defenders has offered the commission is not simply a handover of equipment. It is a handover of confidence, a transfer of belief, a commitment to health and safety of our human rights systems, and we receive it with both hands and full hearts,” said Wangadya, the UHRC Chairperson.
