The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has held its Local Council (L.C1) chairmanship elections today nationwide, according to its roadmap issued by its top leadership recently.
In the districts of Hoima and Kikuube, the elections were greeted with high voter turnout, signaling proper mobilisation by the party leadership and goodwill from the voters to participate in party activities.
The exercise was generally peaceful in the different areas within the sub-counties of Kitoba in Hoima and Buhimba in Kikuube District, with voters forming long lines and enduring the scorching sun.
The common denominator at all polling stations was the absence of names in the NRM register for some people who turned up to vote, including some contesters for the L.C1 chairmanship.
“I feel very frustrated after finding my name missing in the register, and I don’t know what’s next,” Reagan Nuwagaba, one of the contesters for Buhimba L.C1 chairmanship, said.
The Resident District Commissioner of Kikuube and aspiring Member of Parliament for Bugahya Constituency in Hoima attributed the high turnout to good leadership within the NRM and internal party democracy but declined to participate in the voting process.
“I have not participated in the elections as a voter because all the people contesting are my supporters, and I don’t want to take sides. But I am very happy about the high voter turnout,” Tumusiime said.
The NRM village structure elections are part of the greater NRM political and electoral roadmap for 2025–26, which was released by Secretary General Richard Todwong in April this year, urging leaders within the party to fully participate in the process and be observant of the proposed dates for all party activities.
