Uganda joined the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died at the beginning of this week. The somber news has drawn heartfelt reactions from both clergy and lay faithful across the country.
Bishop Anthony Zziwa, the Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese and Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, expressed deep sorrow over the Pope’s death. Describing Pope Francis as a “humble shepherd and a symbol of love and justice,” Bishop Zziwa urged Ugandans to remain united in prayer and faith during this time of loss.
“We have lost a spiritual father, a man who championed mercy, compassion, and care for the poor. His Holiness Pope Francis was not just a leader of the Catholic Church; he was a voice of conscience for the world,” Bishop Zziwa noted.
In honor of the late Pontiff, special prayers will be held today at Lubaga Cathedral, the seat of the Catholic Church in Uganda. The Pope’s envoy to Uganda, the Apostolic Nuncio, will lead the solemn Mass, which is expected to draw a large congregation, including religious leaders, government officials, and hundreds of mourners.
Bishop Zziwa encouraged Ugandans to attend the service or join in prayer from wherever they are.
“Let us come together as one Church to celebrate the life of a man who dedicated himself fully to God and humanity. Even in death, Pope Francis reminds us of the power of humility and service,” Bishop Zziwa added.
The Vatican announced the Pope’s passing on Monday, sparking a wave of global mourning and tributes. Pope Francis, known for his progressive stance on social issues and his simplicity, served as the head of the Catholic Church since 2013. His legacy, according to Bishop Zziwa, will continue to inspire generations.
“Though he is gone, his teachings and example live on. Let us honor him not just with words but by living out the values he cherished—faith, love, and justice,” Bishop Zziwa said.
Lubaga Cathedral is expected to be adorned in solemn white and purple drapery, symbolising mourning and hope, as the faithful bid farewell to a Pope who touched hearts across the world.
