The Kenya High Commission to Uganda has called for deeper regional integration among East African states to enhance market access and economic stability.
Speaking at the commission’s offices in Kampala, Ambassador Joash Maangi emphasized the need for stronger ties between Kenya and Uganda to facilitate the smooth trade of goods and services.
"Goods produced in Kenya should be considered local within the entire East African region, just as those from Uganda and Rwanda.
There may be some agreed customs regulations, but they should not be overly restrictive," he said.
He condemned any attempts to disrupt the free flow of goods, services, and people across borders, stressing the importance of eliminating trade barriers that hinder economic growth.
Maangi made the remarks while flagging off a Ugandan delegation heading to Kenya for the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally.
The event, known for its unpredictable weather and challenging terrain, is regarded as one of the toughest motorsport competitions globally.
Beyond its sporting significance, Maangi highlighted the rally as an opportunity for Uganda to promote its tourism potential while also supporting Kenya’s tourism industry.
He urged both nations to use regional events like this to showcase their cultural and economic strengths.
Kenya and Uganda have previously faced trade disputes, particularly over restrictions on agricultural products and manufactured goods.
