The community of Butale village in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City, is in mourning following the sudden death of Muhamad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. Ssegirinya, who passed away unexpectedly today, has left behind an immense void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the people he served.
Upon arriving in Butale village, we found Ssegirinya’s relatives and friends deeply saddened, with many struggling to process the heartbreaking news.

“We were all shocked. It’s hard to believe that we have lost such a leader, a friend, and a family member,” said one of his relatives, visibly distraught.
An emotional family member added, “The pain is unbearable. We never expected such a thing to happen. Ssegirinya was always full of energy, always there for us, and now he’s gone. It’s difficult to come to terms with it.”
The news of Ssegirinya’s passing spread quickly, and by the time we reached the village at around 8 a.m., people were already gathered—some crying, others in disbelief.
“He was a man who had big plans for his people. His untimely death has left a deep void,” said Kato Enock, a village resident.
Mawanda Jumah Butale, the LC1 chairperson, shared his grief and confirmed that the family had begun preparations for Ssegirinya’s burial.
“I met with the family earlier today, and they have made the arrangements for his final rites. We are all still in shock, but we must come together to support his family,” Mawanda stated.
Ssegirinya’s death comes as a massive blow to the people of Masaka, who viewed him as an influential figure. Locals fondly remembered him for his tireless advocacy for the development of their community.
“He was our ambassador in Kampala. He fought for our rights and the development of our region,” one Masaka resident said. “He was always there for us when we needed him the most.”
