Residents of Kamwenge District are celebrating this year’s Christmas with renewed hope and cautious optimism, a year after the devastating double attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in December 2023.
The tragic events of last year are still fresh in the memories of many.
On December 19, 2023, the rebels attacked Kyabandara Parish in Kamwenge Sub-County, leaving 10 people dead and the community in fear.
Just days later, on Christmas Day, Nyabitutsi Village in the same sub-county was targeted, with three more lives lost in a brutal assault involving pangas and guns.
Despite the lingering trauma, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) swiftly intervened, restoring calm and ensuring the safety of the affected areas.
This year, residents are cautiously optimistic, choosing to focus on the present while remaining vigilant.
“We are grateful for the security efforts that have brought peace back to our communities,” said Africano Aharikundira, the Kamwenge Resident District Commissioner (RDC). “There is no reason to worry. I encourage all residents to relax and enjoy the Christmas festivities. However, we must remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the authorities immediately,” he added.
Many residents have echoed the RDC’s sentiments, acknowledging the efforts of the UPDF and local leaders in restoring normalcy.
“Last year’s attacks were a nightmare we’ll never forget,” said a resident of Kyabandara Parish.
“But we are thankful for the peace we now have. This Christmas, we’re focusing on rebuilding our lives and celebrating with our families, even as we stay alert.”
Another resident of Nyabitutsi Village shared his hopes for the future: “We’ve learned to value peace and community more than ever.
The UPDF has been vigilant, and that gives us confidence that such incidents won’t happen again.”
The UPDF has assured the community of heightened surveillance and quick response measures to prevent any potential threats.
Meanwhile, local leaders continue to engage residents in community meetings to rebuild trust and strengthen security awareness.
As Kamwenge residents gather to celebrate Christmas, the spirit of resilience and unity shines brightly, proving that even in the face of adversity, hope and determination can prevail.
