The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has highlighted a decade of significant progress in the development of roads and bridges, emphasising the role of infrastructure in connecting communities, boosting trade, and driving socio-economic transformation.
In a recent update shared on their official X account, UNRA announced the completion of 2,670.19 kilometers of upgraded roads and 54 bridges, a milestone that has improved access to remote areas and reduced travel times by over 50% in some regions.
These achievements represent not just infrastructural advancement but also transformed lives and accelerated economic growth across Uganda.
Currently, 668.1 kilometers of roads are under construction through 14 ongoing projects, which aim to enhance the country’s transport network further.
Additionally, UNRA has completed the design and planning of 6,170 kilometers of future road projects, reflecting a robust pipeline for Uganda’s infrastructure growth.
UNRA’s efforts have had far-reaching impacts, particularly in rural and underserved regions. Improved road networks have facilitated access to education, healthcare, and markets, while bridges have connected isolated communities, opening up opportunities for trade and investment.
Projects like the Kampala Northern Bypass and the Masindi Port-Karuma route rehabilitation have significantly eased congestion and improved the movement of goods and people.
In addition, UNRA’s emphasis on bridge construction has provided vital links across rivers, enhancing safety and accessibility.
Among the ongoing projects are key highways such as the Rwekunye-Apac-Lira-Puranga road, which will improve connectivity in northern Uganda, and the Mpigi-Kanoni-Maddu-Sembabule road, which links agricultural hubs to urban centers.
The planned projects aim to address gaps in regions with inadequate road infrastructure, further integrating the country’s transport network.
UNRA’s vision aligns with Uganda’s broader development agenda under Vision 2040, which priorities infrastructure as a driver of economic growth.
By focusing on modern, durable, and sustainable road construction, UNRA aims to position Uganda as a regional trade hub, facilitating connections to neighbouring countries and boosting the East African economy.
