Authorities in Kazo District have launched investigations to identify the source of anthrax-infected animals following the death of two residents who consumed contaminated meat.
Early this week, two residents of Keicumu Parish, Engari Sub-county, Kazo District, tragically died after reportedly consuming anthrax-infected meat.
According to residents, the victims, Jonan Ariho (25) and Innocent Tibihikire Ssallongo, succumbed shortly after being rushed to health facilities.
Alfred Nabimanya, the acting Kazo District Veterinary Officer (DVO), confirmed the cause of death. He stated, “We have established that the two individuals died of anthrax. Investigations are underway to trace the source of the infected meat and prevent further spread.”
Both men, who worked as butchers, reportedly developed symptoms consistent with anthrax infection five days after eating the contaminated meat.
Dan Tumwiine, the Engari Sub-county District Councillor, echoed the need for prompt action. “Residents must take swift action by informing authorities of any unusual animal deaths or illnesses. Quick reporting can help us save lives,” Tumwiine urged.
Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, the District Chairperson, expressed concern over the incident and emphasised vigilance.
“This is a sad moment for our community. I urge everyone to be cautious and report any suspected cases to health and veterinary officials immediately,” Katugunda told the Nile Post in an interview.
Authorities are intensifying sensitisation campaigns and urging the public to avoid consuming meat from unknown or suspicious sources.
Health experts warn that anthrax, a potentially deadly disease caused by bacteria found in contaminated animal products, poses a serious risk if not handled properly.
As investigations continue, local leaders have pledged to work closely with health and veterinary officials to contain the outbreak and ensure the safety of the community.
