Buganda Kingdom Unveils Ambitious Budget for 2024/2025, Prioritizing Health, Poverty Reduction, and Self-Reliance

The Buganda Kingdom in Uganda unveiled a robust budget of 257 billion shillings for the 2024/2025 financial year, marking a significant increase from the previous year's 209 billion. This ambitious plan prioritizes the well-being of the Kabaka's subjects, focusing on healthcare, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability.

• Enhancing Healthcare: The kingdom is committed to improving the health of its people. This includes combating HIV/AIDS, ensuring access to clean water, and completing the construction of three crucial hospitals in Buddu, Ssingo, and Kyaggwe.
• Empowering People, Reducing Poverty: The budget emphasizes initiatives that will directly empower Buganda's residents. Encouraging coffee production, promoting cooperative ventures, and fostering other income-generating activities are all central to the kingdom's poverty reduction strategy.
• Investing in the Future: The budget allocates significant resources to human capital development, ensuring a skilled and educated workforce. Additionally, environmental protection remains a top priority, with initiatives geared towards preserving the natural resources that underpin the kingdom's prosperity.

The budget breakdown reflects these priorities:

• Agriculture, Trade, and Cooperatives: Receiving the largest share with 68.9 billion shillings, this highlights the kingdom's commitment to building a self-reliant and thriving economy.
• Investments: 63.5 billion shillings are dedicated to strategic investments aimed at generating long-term benefits for the kingdom.
• Supporting the Kabaka's Office: 36.9 billion shillings are allocated to ensure the smooth functioning of the Kabaka's office, which plays a vital role in the kingdom's governance.
• Land Restoration and Infrastructure: Maintaining the kingdom's land and infrastructure is crucial. A budget of 24.5 billion shillings will be used for land restoration, building renovations, and overall management.

The budget presentation acknowledged the challenges faced in the previous year. A sharp decline in maize prices and an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in some cattle-keeping areas significantly impacted the livelihoods of many Buganda residents.

Furthermore, the kingdom expressed concerns regarding the disparity between tax revenue collected from Buganda, particularly Kampala Kyaddondo, and the level of services provided to taxpayers. The "Luwalo Lwaffe" initiative, designed to encourage voluntary contributions, continues to gain traction, generating 1.5 billion shillings in the previous year.
