The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has cautioned the public to seek meteorological advice before venturing on Lake Victoria
The weatherman say the lake has been experiencing bad weather conditions that is not suitable for certain boats.
Speaking to the media on Monday, the Principal Public Relations Officer at UNMA, Ms Lillian Nkwenge, said since Friday last week, the lake has been experiencing strong winds and moderate waves in some zones.
She cited Entebbe and the North-Eastern zone of Lake Victoria
"There are marine forecasts between 3pm and 3am that people should take heed of before getting involved in any lake activities," she said.
Ms Nkwenge said the announcement is usually made on local radios stations, adding that chairpersons of villages at landing sites and lakeshores were under instructions to take necessary caution before allowing indulgence.
The people prone to these weather changes are fishermen, small boat users, and small aircraft users, which is especially for June and July.
"Apart from the moderate waves and strong winds, there are water spouts that come from cumulus clouds which come down as a funnel figure; rotate, destroy, and kill or throw away whatever they find in their vicinity," Ms Nkwenge said
The meteorology centre said in June and July, Lake Victoria becomes unsafe, a period when most accidents happen.
However, with the dispersal of the marine forecasts, the accidents have been reduced to 70-80 percent, which can be decreased even more with cooperation from the public, especially the fishermen and party revelers.
