At least one person has been confirmed dead and 30 others injured in an accident in which a bus collided with a truck that was carrying passengers in Nebbi District.

The bus, registration number UBF 050H belonging to YY Coaches was being driven by Tadeo Semakula. It reportedly collided with an Isuzu truck number UBJ 414T at about 8am on Tuesday at Awika bridge along Arua-Nebbi Highway.

According to police, at least 30 people have been injured and one person identified as Darius Okello died on the spot.

“Both vehicles were travelling from Nebbi heading towards Arua City," reads part of the statement by West Nile regional police.

"The truck, which was carrying passengers was ahead, being followed by the bus and when the driver of the truck [suddenly] slowed down due at a pothole, the bus driver hit it from behind pushing it off the road and it over turned."

Police had to pursue the bus driver since he did not stop at the scene and intercepted him at Odiayandri trading centre. The bus was impounded and taken to Arua Police Station.

Josephine Angucia, the regional police spokesperson, attributed the cause of accident to reckless driving by the bus driver.

This is the second fatal accident to be registered in this week claiming at least 11 lives.
