Youth call for greater transparency in G77
As the dust settles on the recently concluded Non-aligned Movement Summit and G-77 Summits in Kampala, the youth of Uganda have adopted and released a groundbreaking "Debt For Climate Global South Position and Policy Statement" addressed to G77 Chair, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The policy seeks to revive and fortify the New International Economic Order (NIEO) proposed by the G77 in 1974 at the United Nations.
Eriga Reagan Elijah, co-founder of Debt for Climate Uganda, emphasized the historical significance and visionary goals that inspired nations towards a more just and equitable global economic landscape.
In alignment with the NIEO spirit, the youth emphasize the crucial role of youth inclusion in decision-making processes. Eriga states, "Empowering the youth is not just a matter of justice but a strategic imperative. We are ready and committed to breathe new life into the NIEO's principles, contribute ideas, energy, and innovation."
Meanwhile, like-minded youth and climate enthusiasts are urging G-77+ China to prioritize transparency in decision-making.
Cynthia Kemigisha, Head of Communication at the Uganda Council of Foreign Relations, stresses the need for clear information to ensure understanding and support from the broader community. "Transparency fosters trust and strengthens G-77's credibility globally," Kemigisha emphasizes.
The Statement to the G-77 Chair encompasses several critical points, including a call to end financial neo-colonial approaches; an integrated approach to climate, clean energy, and debt cancellation, as well asĀ a push for transparency.
