Njeru Municipality Member of Parliament, Jimmy Lwanga, has officially joined the MK movement, led by Gen Muhoozi Kainerughaba.

Lwanga's Damascus moment occurred on Tuesday during the Soroti Baraza event and was marked by a handshake with Gen Muhoozi.

Previously, Lwanga had dismissed reports of his crossover to the MK Movement, stating that his meeting with President Museveni's First Son was merely an attempt to seek the President's attention.

Lwanga expressed his frustration in attempts to meet with President Museveni, stating that he had gone to great lengths but without success.

Lwanga, along with other MPs, has now expressed support for Gen Muhoozi's presidential bid in 2026.

This development has startled the opposition in the country.

It should be noted that Gen Muhoozi, who is the former commander of the Land Forces of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, announced his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election but later retracted his tweet.

Lwanga is not the first MP to break ranks with Kyagulanyi's NUP political party and join Gen Muhoozi's campaign.

Dr. Twaha Kagabo, the Member of Parliament for Bukoto South, reportedly also left NUP to join the MK Movement.

The NUP party leadership in Kampala and within the District structures has been in conflict with Lwanga and other opposition MPs since his election to Parliament.

The party accuses Lwanga of betraying the struggle by secretly engaging with the incumbent regime, which is accused of human rights violations.

In the previous election, Lwanga, who previously served as Njeru Municipality Speaker, won with 13,676 votes on the National Unity Platform ticket to become the Njeru Municipality MP.

President Museveni has consistently criticised the opposition in Uganda, stating that there is no genuine opposition and referring to some opposition members as disgruntled individuals.
