Officials from the National Drug Authority (NDA) have seized a consignment of suspected counterfeit human and veterinary medicines during an enforcement operation in the Kawempe and Kanyanya areas of Kampala.
The operation targeted drug outlets and storage facilities allegedly dealing in unregistered, substandard and illegally distributed medicines.
According to the Authority, three suspects were arrested during the crackdown and are currently being held at Kawempe Police Station as investigations continue.
The NDA said the operation is part of its ongoing efforts to protect the public from unsafe medicines.
“The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to eliminate counterfeit and unsafe medicines from the market and protect public health,” the Authority said.
Officials added that more arrests could follow as investigators work to trace the wider distribution chain behind the suspected illegal drug trade.
The Authority also urged members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing medicines.
“Members of the public are advised not to purchase medicines from unlicensed vendors, roadside sellers and unauthorized outlets. All medicines should be obtained through approved and regulated channels,” the NDA said.
The regulator warned that counterfeit and substandard medicines pose significant risks to both humans and animals.
“Counterfeit and substandard drugs pose serious health risks, including treatment failure, worsening illness and possible loss of life,” the Authority cautioned.
The NDA said it will continue intensifying enforcement operations across the country to strengthen drug safety and ensure that only approved medicines reach consumers.
