Cabinet yesterday agreed to amend the Nakivubo War memorial Stadium Trust Act, 1953 so as to streamline and strengthen the management of the stadium.
According to a press statement, cabinet highlighted the three objectives why the Act needs to be amended.
In the first place, the amendment is geared towards strengthening the legal framework for redevelopment and upgrading of the stadium to meet the required modern and global standards.
Secondly, the amendment is intended to prohibit the board from selling, leasing, disposing of otherwise dealing in the scheduled (Trust) property or any part thereof (of it) as stated in the current Act.
The third objective, according to the statement, government wants to guarantee adherence to corporate governance principles in the running of the stadium.
By the time cabinet approved the amendment to the Act, the re-construction and development of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium had been greeted with mixed reaction from sections of the public.
The stadium is being redeveloped by businessman, Hamis Kiggundu, who has constructed a shopping mall on the perimeter.
