Police say a record number defilement cases reported but few prosecuted

Police in Kanungu District has commenced a hunt for Congolese gunmen who kidnapped a man before taking with him to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the Kigezi sub-region, Elly Maate, the incident happened on Wednesday at 11 pm Kanyashande cell, Kihembe parish, Kanyantorogo Sub County in Kanungu district when six men armed with an SMG rifle, a panga and spear kidnapped Elly Byarugaba a resident of Bushoro Cell in Kihembe parish.

“The victim was traveling on a motorcycle whose registration number is not yet established together with two other occupants namely when they were intercepted by the kidnappers using a rope they had tied on both sides of the road,” Maate told this website.

On stopping, the victims were attacked by the group of armed men who kidnapped Byaruhanga but his colleagues survived narrowly.

The police mouthpiece said security suspects the kidnappers could have crossed to DRC at a place called Nyamitembe cell, Buganza parish Binza Sub County in Rushuro district.

“No communication has been made as in demanding for a ransom as inquiries are ongoing,” Maate said.

Past incidents

A number of people have in the past been kidnapped in Kanungu by gunmen from the nearby Democratic Republic of Congo and released after paying a ransom.
