The cabinet meeting which sat on Monday put in place a policy to empower teachers in both Public and Private Institutions of learning, access salaries and remunerations commensurate with their academic qualifications and professional experience.
While presenting the cabinet resolutions at a press briefing at Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, government spokesman Ofwono Opondo said: “This business of a teacher holding a degree and is paid peanuts, while the one holding lower academic qualifications is paid higher, will cease to happen once this policy of harmonising teachers’ salaries is put into effect."
He said the policy will among others; streamline teachers’ management for better productivity, discipline, retention and motivation.
He castigated some school administrators who put discriminative laws, based on religious grounds into their institutions of learning, saying this is illegal and will not be tolerated once the policy comes into force.
“Take for example, a religious founded school, where its top administrators all belong to that religious denomination. This is a high form of social discrimination in society, which should be outlawed”, he added.
On Kilembe Mines, Ofwono said government intends to undertake further mineral exploration to add to the known reserve base, thereby enhancing the viability of mining operations; immediate exploration of the ascertained mineral reserves and resources and attract private sector capital, management and technical expertise with a commitment to install efficient and modern technology, to maximise the future of Kilembe Mines Limited operating results among others.
On the women entrepreneurship program, Ofwono said government is to; simplify the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme, Application form and business plan to make it more user friendly for the beneficiaries.
“Police will be empowered to apprehend and arraign before Courts of Law, women loan defaulters who borrow money from one district and migrate to another district to borrow money again”, he said.
